Alfie Kohn - Featured Keynote

THE RICH GET RICHER AND THE POOR GET WORKSHEETS: Tough Questions About Test-Driven School "Reform"

Come hear Alfie Kohn, the influential and provocative writer/lecturer who, for over two decades, has been raising central questions about our current educational practices. As he sees it, in the name of “raising standards” and demanding “accountability,” politicians and business leaders have imposed a top-down series of mandates that are squeezing the intellectual life out of our schools -- and doing particular damage to those who most need help. Ironically, while reformers talk about "closing the achievement gap," the policies they advocate often condemn low-income students to a relentless diet of test preparation and heavy-handed bribe-and-threat discipline that undermine learning (and interest in learning), even if they do succeed in raising scores on standardized tests.

He has written for the leading education periodicals and has appeared twice on “Oprah.” Time magazine described him as “perhaps the country’s most outspoken critic of education’s fixation on grades [and] test scores.” Kohn lives in the Boston area and (virtually) at www.alfiekohn.org.
