Dr. Frank Farkey, Laura Carnell Professor of Educational Psychology was named to the Board of Directors of the Elwyn Institute. Elwyn is one of the nation’s oldest private non-profit organizations serving people with intellectual, developmental and behavioral challenges.
Two faculty members in the College of Education at Temple University have been elected to national leadership positions of the American Psychological Association.
Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab was selected as a recipient of a 5-year $2,175,114 Institute of Education Sciences grant to study retention of financial aid and college persistence. In this project, researchers investigate whether an intervention that provides financial aid information, reminders, and advising to college students increases completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and compliance with the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements of the Pell grant program.
The research of Drs. Annemarie Hindman and Barbara Wasik shows that poor children's vocabulary gap is evident at 18 months and widens to make learning more difficult and create lifelong disadvantages. Read the article here.

As part of grant from the National Science Foundation, Dr. Carol Brandt, Associate Professor of Science Education and a team of researchers will explore a novel model for graduate education that centers on the body as a link between the social and life sciences, including geography and genomics. Part of the grant involves graduate students collaborating on an interactive exhibit with the Franklin Institute.
Sarah Cordes, a professor of educational leadership policy at Temple University in Philadelphia, asserts that the most pressing problem in education finance is not funding sources. It is the fact that Pennsylvania is one of the few states that do not have an education funding formula that allocates state funds based on the current characteristics of a district—for example, a district’s wealth, student characteristics, and changes in different categories of enrollment.
Dr. Gregory M. Anderson coauthored chapter of Critical Approaches to the Study of Higher Education, published in 2015 by John Hopkins University Press. This edited book was selected for the American Education Research Association (AERA) Division J 2016 Outstanding Publication Award. The award recognizes scholars for specific publications judged as making substantial contributions to the literature and/or practice of higher education.
