Basic Skills Assessment Options

Requirements for students in all Teacher Certification Programs


SAT or ACT Option

Students who meet either the SAT or ACT minimum score requirements at the time of college matriculation are exempt from taking the PAPA or Praxis Core.

  • SAT: Minimum total score of at least 1550 total with no score on any section (math, verbal or writing) lower than 500.

OR

  • ACT: Composite score of 23 along with a combined English/Writing score of 22 and a Math score of 21

If students have not met the minimum scores for the SAT or ACT they have the choice of taking Praxis Core for Educators or Pre-service Academic Performance Assessment (PAPA).

Praxis Core Scoring

Individual Module Scoring Method:

  • Reading minimum score = 156
  • Math minimum score = 150
  • Writing minimum score = 162

Praxis CORE Composite Scoring Method*:

  • Reading: 148
  • Math: 142
  • Writing: 158
  • Overall composite score: 475 or above
    Example: If Reading is 148 and Math is 142, then minimum Writing must be 185.

Pre-service Academic Performance Assessment (PAPA)

PAPA Scoring

Individual Module Scoring Method

  • Reading minimum score = 220
  • Math minimum score = 220
  • Writing minimum score = 220

Composite Scoring Method

  • Reading minimum score = 193
  • Math minimum score = 197
  • Writing minimum score = 192
  • Overall Composite score = 686 or above
    Example: If Reading is 193, and Math is 197, then Writing must be 296 for the total to equal 686.
