Temple Teacher Residency (TTR) is an accelerated teacher education program devoted to preparing diverse and highly-motivated individuals to teach middle or high school mathematics, science, Spanish, or special education in high-need schools in the City of Philadelphia. In only 12 months (13.5 for special education), graduates earn a master in education (MEd) and complete necessary courses and fieldwork for Instructional I certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

TTR addresses the critical need for STEM, Spanish, English Language Arts and special education teachers in the City of Philadelphia and prepares effective educators.

Who's Who in TTR

  • Residents: Our students are known as residents. They come from various industry/academic backgrounds and expertise and they are passionate about teaching in Philadelphia.

  • Mentors: Experienced classroom teachers, carefully selected from a number of schools within the School District of Philadelphia and American Paradigm Schools network.

  • Coaches: Provide support to residents throughout the school year.

  • TTR Team: Amy Scallon, Associate Director of Clinical Practice - Middle Grades/Secondary Education; Shanae Bryan, Assistant Director of Alternative Pathways into Teaching

The TTR Experience

Temple Teacher Residency participants are immersed in a hands-on, collaborative co-teaching experience after being matched with an experienced mentor teacher through a thoughtful matching process that considers residents’ areas of focus and intended grade levels. Residents complete their field experience with their mentor teachers in their host schools throughout their residency year. Mentors, coaches and the TTR team work together with residents to ensure the residents

  • learn and practice planning and preparing for lessons;

  • create a classroom environment/culture of respect and community;

  • provide accessible instruction to all students; and

  • are supported throughout the rigorous residency year and as they begin their careers as educators.

Residents enjoy a cohort model, resulting in a shared experience and a built-in community of support, motivation and understanding.
