Graduate Student Advising

The Office of Academic Advising supports graduate students from new student orientation to degree completion.  All master’s degree and certificate-seeking students are assigned a professional advisor and a faculty advisor.  All doctoral students are assigned a faculty advisor.

THE ROLE OF THE PROFESSIONAL ADVISOR INCLUDES:

  • Provide registration events, orientation and one-one-one advising meetings to newly admitted students.
  • Provide students with information about their degree requirements. (Requirements are found in the Graduate Bulletin.)
  • Assist students with course registration.
  • Support students by providing information about university and college resources.
  • Inform students of policies and processes needed to navigate their educational experience.
  • Communicate pertinent information to students via newsletters, emails and Canvas sites.

THE ROLE OF THE FACULTY ADVISOR INCLUDES:

  • Provide students with guidance and constructive feedback about academic and related career/personal goals.
  • Provide recommendations for electives that align with student goals and interests (in programs that have electives).
  • Inform students of academic opportunities related to goals and degree (i.e., research opportunities).
  • Act as a mentor in the field of study.

Doctoral students are assigned a faculty advisor they should consult with each semester. Our supports doctoral students when they reach the point of registering for their dissertation proposal writing course. The graduate advisors provide students with information about Temple’s Graduate School deadlines, processes and forms.
