What: Next Steps AmeriCorps is a college success and retention program supporting college students in their personal development and college journey.
Next Steps engages students, also known as Corps members/mentors, in 300 hours (about 10-12 per week) of community service, mentorship, workshops, and leadership development throughout the service year. Members are placed with a community-focused nonprofit partner organization to complete their service and attend several "all-Corps events" for professional development and group service activities.
Members will receive a stipend during the year through Federal Work-Study (must qualify), as well as a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,565 upon completion of the 300 hours. Each member is also matched with an incoming first-year student to provide mentorship throughout the year.
Who: The program is open to Temple sophomore and junior-year students with permanent residence status who are Pell Grant eligible or qualify for Federal Work Study, with preference given to first-generation students and those who attended local Philadelphia high schools.
Next Steps also recruits incoming freshmen, also known as mentees, to participate in year-round mentorship with the support of their Corps member/mentor. Mentees should also meet the requirements listed above. Mentees are not eligible to receive an Education Award, but are eligible to apply to Next Steps the following year as a sophomore, if they wish.
When: This year’s program runs August 20, 2025 through August 19, 2026. All required 300 hours will need to be completed during this time frame.
Why: Make a real impact in the lives of others while receiving the support you need to succeed in college. Join a community of campus leaders and become part of a national movement dedicated to service and change!
