Assistant Dean's Message - August 2024

August 2024

Welcome back?

I come from the Midwest, and school started for us around August 15. I remember going clothes shopping with my mother, sweaty and sticky, trying on new pants and blouses and wishing that the dress code permitted shorts. (Shorts were allowed only on the last day of school.) Nonetheless, I loved school and the beginning of a new year felt exciting. Who doesn’t like the smell of a box of crayons?

Fast forward to adulthood and I have spent the last few days feeling like summer went by too fast. We moved my daughter out of her dorm on May 17, but I swear it was just yesterday. We spent two weeks in Maine, and I’m still picking up the remnants of sand and sea glass from my tote bag. How is it possible that my alarm now resets to 5:45 a.m. to ensure my son is out the door for his (gasp!) junior year of high school?

Whether you embrace your fleeting summer days or are ready to start a new school year, I can promise you that we are thrilled to see campus bustling once again. We’ve missed you! How did your summer go? Do you have thrilling opportunities this fall? We’d love to hear from you! We met some wonderful alumni featured in this month's newsletter. The staff also shared some of their summer adventures as well. Lastly, for the pumpkin spice lovers in our midst, don’t forget that Homecoming is right around the corner. The College will host a tent of tailgate fun. Please stop by and say hello!

January 2025

Recently, I was the organist for a funeral of a gentleman who hiked over 216,000 miles over the span of three decades. Such a remarkable feat! He called these hikes his “journeys,” and enjoyed each of them, even if it was merely a quick walk in our local state park.

One of the best aspects of my role is hearing about your journey. I ask what brought you to Temple, to the CEHD, to your current career. Your responses are varied, but one thing is consistent from alum to alum—preparation. Your time in the nest prepared you for whatever hike you ventured upon. Often you have a mentor/professor that fortified your steps along the way. Your recollection of classes you enjoyed, internships you completed, friendships you made all shaped your Temple adventure. Thank you for giving me that opportunity to share your trek with others, and for a chance to inspire alumni to give back their time, talent and treasure to the college.

From fledgling owlets to Temple Owls, I hope to hear more of these stories as we start 2025. You can reach me at .
