Biography

Dr. Janelle M. Bailey is a Professor of Science Education and the Program Coordinator for the Education PhD within the Department of Teaching and Learning at Temple University. Her research focuses on astronomy and Earth science education as well as teacher development. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA and has been published in research and teacher practitioner journals such as Science Education, International Journal of Science Education, American Journal of Physics, Astronomy Education Review, The Physics Teacher, and Science Scope. She teaches courses for science teachers of grades K-16, at undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels, as well as research design and methods—including mixed methods—for doctoral students. Dr. Bailey is a Past President of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) and a member of numerous other science and science education professional organizations. She serves as an editorial board member or reviewer for several journals. Dr. Bailey earned her Ph.D. in Teaching and Teacher Education (minor in Astronomy) with a focus on astronomy education from the University of Arizona; an M.Ed. in Science Education and 7-12 science certification (GA) from the University of Georgia; and a B.A. in Astrophysics (minor in Mathematics) from Agnes Scott College. She previously worked on the faculty of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; as a physics and chemistry teacher at Campbell County High School, Gillette, Wyoming; and as the Bradley Observatory Planetarium Director at Agnes Scott College.
