As Pennsylvania—and the nation—confronts persistent teacher shortages, Temple University’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) is helping lead the response. As highlighted in a recent Philadelphia Tribune article, a new citywide teacher recruitment campaign, backed by a $200,000 investment from the Philadelphia Citywide Talent Coalition, aims to address thousands of unfilled teaching positions across Philadelphia schools.
In the article, CEHD Dean Monika Williams Shealey emphasized that while increased attention and investment are critical, the CEHD has long been actively engaged in this work, turning interest into action. The college offers established pathways into teaching, strong school and community partnerships, and a sustained commitment to preparing and retaining diverse educators for Philadelphia and the Commonwealth.
Those preparing to enter the profession—our students—tell the story best. In their words:
“This program has helped me become a better teacher and a better person… If you really care and want to see the future, teaching is the way to go.” -Erick Smith, Special Education, Temple Teacher Residency Participant
“In high school, I took education classes and even did some student teaching. That’s when I realized this is what I want to do… Both of my parents showed me the importance of guiding others, and that really influenced my decision to go into education.” -Eliana Geva, Early Childhood Education
“Representation matters, so when students see a teacher—a role model—who looks like them, it opens their minds to new possibilities.” -Sanaa White, Early Childhood Education
“Being an educator is about giving students a voice… I want to uplift students, build on their strengths and ensure every student feels valued.” -Howard Salvatore, Secondary Education-Social Studies
