Temple University’s College of Education and Human Development marked graduation with a celebration full of pride and well-earned excitement for the future. As graduates gathered with family, friends and faculty in McGonigle Hall, the ceremony reflected not only years of hard work and perseverance, but also the community that supported them along the way. The Class of 2026 was sent off with big energy, proud smiles and a clear reminder that this moment belongs to everyone who helped them get there.
Dean Monika Williams Shealey opened the ceremony by welcoming graduates to what she called the “liveliest graduation ceremony” at Temple. She framed the occasion as both celebration and transition, emphasizing that a commencement marks the start of a new chapter. She also highlighted the college’s impact in Philadelphia and the ways students have already contributed through fieldwork, service and scholarship.
Graduate student speaker Madison Kearney delivered one of the ceremony’s most impactful moments, centering her remarks on hope, community and support systems. The two-time Temple Made first-generation college student, she reflected on how Temple helped her translate awareness into advocacy. She encouraged classmates to continue that work beyond graduation, grounded in purpose and compassion.
Undergraduate student speaker Chloe Smelser followed with a focus on advocacy and responsibility. Drawing from her family’s experiences and her work with Temple’s Institute on Disabilities, she urged graduates to recognize the power of their collective voice. She called on fellow Temple Owls to apply the skills they developed at the university toward building a future that is more inclusive, more just and more compassionate.
The keynote address from Mayor Cherelle L. Parker added a meaningful highlight to the ceremony. As Philadelphia’s first female mayor and a former educator, Parker shared her path through public service and perseverance. She encouraged graduates to trust their preparation, remain engaged with their communities and use their education to drive meaningful impact. Her remarks reinforced the connection between Temple and the City of Philadelphia and the responsibility that comes with it.
Students across academic levels were recognized during the ceremony, including those earning bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, doctoral degrees and certificates in the Leadership and Career Studies program. Each recognition underscored sustained effort and achievement, contributing to the overall sense of accomplishment across the college.
As graduates crossed the stage and moved their tassels from right to left, McGonigle Hall filled with applause and celebration. The moment marked both completion and continuation, a class stepping forward with purpose, support and momentum toward what comes next.
