Temple University College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our alumni. Through their dedication and impact, they embody Temple's values and demonstrate the power of education to transform lives and communities.

Meet Sharmain W. Matlock-Turner, EDU '97, a visionary leader and advocate for change—and the CEHD 2025 Gallery of Success Honoree.

As CEO of the Urban Affairs Coalition since 1999, Matlock-Turner has been a driving force for change in Philadelphia. Under her leadership, UAC has managed over $1 billion in public and private funds to support underserved communities. A recognized leader in economic inclusion, youth development and nonprofit capacity building, she has received numerous honors, including the 2023 Philadelphia Award. Her influence extends to national organizations and local institutions, where she continues to advocate for lasting impact.

"Becoming the first in my family to attend college was more than a personal achievement; it was a turning point that shaped my leadership and career," says Matlock-Turner. "Temple University's College of Education and Human Development played a vital role in that journey. Education provides a powerful foundation—one that strengthens perspective, informs leadership and reveals the real-world impact of knowledge in action."

She further adds that her time at Temple was instrumental in building the skills and confidence to engage with state government. "I learned how to effectively tell my story, write with clarity and purpose, and communicate in ways that resonate across diverse audiences. That foundation continues to empower me in my work and leadership."

Temple University has also recognized the early successes of young alumni who exemplify what it means to be Temple Made. These rising stars are part of Temple's 30 Under 30—a prestigious group of young professionals making an impact in their fields.

This year, CEHD is proud to celebrate two honorees: Sydney Smith, EDU '23, and Joseph Curry, EDU '22, who are shaping the future of education through their dedication, advocacy, leadership and innovation.

Inspiring the Next Generation: Sydney Smith, EDU '23

Philadelphia native Sydney Smith is making a difference in the classroom as a second grade teacher in the School District of Philadelphia. A former Temple Education Scholars, she gained early experience through the university's dual enrollment program while in high school. During her senior year at Temple, Sydney stepped up as a student teacher when a lead teacher left unexpectedly, proving her leadership and earning a full-time role at John Moffet School. Beyond the classroom, she successfully advocated for stipends for student teachers and mentors aspiring educators through the Freedom Schools Literacy Academy.

"Teaching is more than a job. It's a calling. I'm grateful to the College of Education and Human Development for shaping my journey and for providing me with the opportunity to make a difference," Smith says.

"The College of Education and Human Development was a pivotal factor in my journey to becoming a teacher. With the help of advisors and faculty members, I was able to get my degree on an accelerated timeline to accommodate my individual goals.
