In recognition of National Transfer Student Week, Oct. 19-23, the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) is spotlighting Willa Flickinger, who transferred to Temple University from Bucks County Community College to pursue her passion for education and creating meaningful learning experiences for children beyond the traditional classroom.
Flickinger is expected to complete her bachelor of science in human development and community engagement in fall 2028.
CEHD: What made you decide to transfer to Temple and CEHD?
WF: Temple’s diverse campus and location were important factors in my decision. Most of all, I saw an opportunity to combine human development and community engagement with a certificate in children’s media to create a unique educational experience aligned with my interest in learning beyond the traditional classroom.
CEHD: What is one experience, strength or perspective you brought with you as a transfer student?
WF: Rather than following the traditional path straight to college from high school, I jumped right into the workforce. This gave me real-world experience and perspective, along with a greater appreciation for the value of higher education and academic engagement.
CEHD: What has helped you feel supported, connected or successful since joining CEHD?
WF: All of the faculty and advisors I’ve worked with in CEHD have made themselves accessible through office hours and consistent communication, showing their investment in my success. Another thing that has helped me feel supported and connected is the diversity of ages and experiences in my classes, which makes me feel less isolated as a transfer student.
CEHD: What advice would you give to a new transfer student?
WF: My biggest piece of advice is to participate and do the readings. You gain so much more, and class is always more fun when you are engaged and know what’s going on. Also, never be afraid to ask for help. There is not a single faculty or staff member on campus who wants to see you fail.
CEHD: What are your future professional goals?
WF: My dream job is to be a children’s librarian, but more broadly, I hope to develop and create meaningful educational experiences for children outside of the usual school environment.
As CEHD celebrates National Transfer Student Week, Flickinger’s experience highlights the value transfer students bring to the college community and the many paths students take to pursue their educational and professional goals.
