Temple University's College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) is expanding access to high-quality teacher preparation with the launch of four graduate certificate programs designed to provide a direct and flexible path to Pennsylvania Department of Education Level I Certification. These programs offer an accelerated and cost-competitive option for individuals seeking to enter the teaching profession or expand their existing credentials, as well as people who wish to continue their education and complete a master's degree.
The newly launched graduate certificates prepare candidates for certification in the following areas: early and elementary education, middle grades education, secondary education (available in English, math, science, social studies or world/foreign languages), and special education (PreK-12).
The early and elementary, middle grades and secondary education programs are tailored to support a wide range of learners, including career changers and those with temporary certification or emergency permits. The special education certificate is specifically designed for teachers with an Instruction I certification who want to add special education.
"We are excited about these new pathways into teaching, which are designed to streamline the experiences of teacher candidates while targeting critical aspects of classroom preparedness," says Kristie Newton, associate dean of educator preparation and P-12 partnerships.
The graduate certificates, which range from 19 to 22 credit hours, offer varied modalities to accommodate different learning styles and life circumstances. They prepare participants to meet Pennsylvania state certification requirements while offering a foundation for further graduate study. Credits earned through the programs may be applied toward a master's degree in the same certification area within the CEHD.
These new offerings underscore the CEHD's ongoing commitment to advancing education in Philadelphia and beyond. By preparing aspiring and current educators with the expertise, tools and credentials they need, the college is helping to cultivate a strong and well-prepared teaching workforce poised to create meaningful change in classrooms and communities.
Enrollment for the middle grades and secondary education certificate programs begins in this year's second summer session, while early and elementary education and special education will be available starting in the fall.
