As community partnerships continue to expand throughout the Philadelphia area, Dr. Meghan Raisch, the Educational Engagement Specialist at Temple University, is working closely with the Norris Afterschool Program to help provide resources to local children, such as meals and academic support. The Norris Afterschool Program boasts a resident-led program working to serve children in the community through education-focused initiatives such as targeted tutoring and academic support. The program regularly has staff meet with teachers to discover resources for families who may be struggling. Since the spring of 2015, the program has nearly doubled in enrollment. Students enrolled have experienced academic gains in attendance, behavior, and test scores, which is noted by teachers who have witnessed the importance of community engagement and targeted support for students. The latest partnership with Temple University and the Norris Afterschool Program illustrates the growing importance for community involvement to address educational challenges for Philadelphia students.
