The Department of Teaching and Learning is dedicated to preparing a diverse community of educators who are committed to educational equity. Our programs seek to foster a deep understanding of learning, development, effective teaching methods and the sociocultural context of schools. By developing these understandings, we prepare practitioners who ensure that every student’s linguistic and cultural knowledge is valued and who recognize that all students, including those with disabilities, are capable. These practitioners make a positive impact within schools, organizations and the broader community. We also seek to conduct research and prepare doctoral students to do research that has the potential to improve learning and teaching, especially for historically underserved populations.

Three-components of Teacher Education at Temple

At Temple, our work with preservice teachers, inservice teachers, and doctoral students is grounded in the belief that education is a primary mechanism for social mobility and social justice. We seek to conduct research and to prepare doctoral students to do research that has the potential to improve learning and teaching, especially of historically underserved populations. We also seek to provide our inservice and preservice teachers with deep understandings of research and theory that will help them become reflective practitioners who are committed to serving diverse students and to becoming educational leaders and agents of change in whatever setting they teach.
