May is always an eventful month as Owls are wrapping up their semesters and welcoming the long days of summer. With that comes commencement and the season of recognition for those who went above and beyond in their studies. This year, we were proud to recognize several outstanding students for their accomplishments and contributions to their fields of study. Elaina Hawkins will join the ranks of Fulbright Scholars in the fall as she prepares for her travels to Spain to serve as an English teaching assistant in a high school classroom. She plans to refine her Spanish language skills while immersing herself in Spanish culture to provide an authentic Spanish education to her future high school students when she returns to the U.S. We were also pleased to recognize Elisabeth Fornaro who received the prestigious IARSLCE Dissertation Award for her research on how service learning affects teachers' job satisfaction. A recent graduate of the urban education program, Fornaro looks forward to applying her research and teaching experience to the multitude of opportunities now afforded to her. Kathryn Chiodo received Temple's competitive Diamond Award for her exceptional academic and extracurricular achievements. Chiodo was involved in a variety of organizations at Temple including intramural sports, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, and served as a committee member for Temple's Hoot-A-Thon. In addition to applauding our outstanding owls, the College of Education and Human Development hosted the 2018 Philadelphia Reading Olympics, which encourages young readers to complete an extensive reading list and compete against other schools to show off what they learned. Temple hosted 26 teams this year, which was the largest in program history.
