In less than a month, Philadelphia will host the highly anticipated 2024 American Education Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting. As the city gears up to welcome the largest gathering of education researchers, the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) is thrilled to be at the forefront of this intellectual exchange.

The AERA Annual Meeting, set to kick off on Apr. 11, has over 2,500 sessions centered around this year's theme "Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action." The CEHD community is prominently featured throughout the conference program, with over 60 sessions highlighting the distinguished work of our faculty, researchers and students.

"Temple University is Philadelphia's public research university, and our prominence is reflected in the number of presentations that are being led by our faculty and graduate students at this year's AERA annual meeting," shared Monika Williams Shealey, CEHD dean. "The topics of the presentations reflect the work of our faculty across all our departments and take on persistent issues facing public education by offering solutions that result in equitable educational opportunities for P-16 learners." Shealey will chair a symposium, serve as a panelist, participate in an invited speaker session, and present a paper during the conference.

In previous years, Shealey served in leadership positions in AERA, offering her a chance to serve the profession more broadly. "My scholarship grew from my desire to disrupt systems that have historically failed to serve Black and Brown students well, particularly those living in poverty and receiving services in special education," she said. "After moving into leadership positions in higher education, I began to study the role of educators, teacher educators and leaders in promoting and supporting teaching and scholarship that advances an equity-focused agenda." Shealey added she looks forward to attending this year's AERA, mentoring graduate students and faculty and participating in sessions led by outstanding Temple faculty and students.

As the countdown to the 2024 AERA Annual Meeting begins, the CEHD is eager to connect and engage with colleagues and attendees.
