Temple University's College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) proudly celebrates the election of Heidi Hutman as vice president of education and training for the Society of Counseling Psychology (SCP), a division of the American Psychological Association (APA). This national leadership role recognizes Hutman's longstanding commitment to clinical excellence, educational equity and the advancement of equitable training practices in psychology.
An associate professor of practice in the Department of Psychological Studies in Education in the CEHD, Hutman brings extensive experience and a clear vision to her role with the SCP. At Temple, she trains master's-level clinicians in culturally responsive care. She currently chairs the APA's Membership Board, and has held numerous leadership roles, including co-chair of the International Interdisciplinary Conference on Clinical Supervision, past chair of the SCP Membership Committee, and former mentor to students and early-career psychologists through the Leadership Collaborative.
"As the child of immigrants whose education was disrupted by the Holocaust, my family taught me that education empowers and liberates," Hutman shared in her SCP election statement. "I'm excited to help SCP live its values out loud in the education and training sphere."
In her new role, Hutman will prioritize expanding access to training opportunities that center social justice, structural competence and the dismantling of anti-Black racism. She will continue to advocate for robust master's-level training and protect critical funding streams such as Graduate Psychology Education (GPE) grants. Another key focus will be fostering inclusive dialogue about how today's political climate impacts educational access and equity across graduate clinical training programs.
Her appointment underscores the SCP's commitment to leadership that is grounded in both professional expertise and lived experience. Hutman's dedication to fostering reflective, justice-oriented training environments aligns closely with the SCP's mission to integrate psychological science with ethical, multicultural practice.
Originally from Montreal, Canada, Hutman worked as a licensed professional counselor in Quebec before relocating to the U.S., where she is now a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania. In addition to her academic and leadership roles, she maintains a small private practice supporting diverse individuals through life transitions, career development, and relational and familial concerns. Her scholarly interests lie in multicultural competency development, clinical supervision and professional training. She also serves on the editorial board of Training and Education in Professional Psychology and The Counseling Psychologist.
Hutman's election is a significant milestone for the CEHD and the broader counseling psychology community. We congratulate her on this well-earned leadership appointment and look forward to the transformative impact she will continue to make in the field.
