Biography
Tim Patterson is an associate professor in Teaching and Learning at Temple University. His primary scholarly interest unites two important strands of the research on social studies education: teacher education and global studies. He has conducted studies on various factors that condition, constrain, and otherwise influence the pedagogical decision making of pre- and in-service social studies teachers. His dissertation research brought him to China, where he investigated the learning of American teachers participating in a 3-week study abroad program. He has also investigated teacher preparation in museums, archives, historical homes, and other cultural institutes, historical children’s literature, and the identity development of early career social studies teachers. Patterson's research has been published in such journals as Teaching and Teacher Education, the Journal of Teacher Education, Teachers College Record, Theory & Research in Social Education, and the British Journal of Educational Studies.
More recently, Patterson's focus has shifted to concerts, film festivals, and other global events as venues for enactments of global citizenship education. This agenda has culminated in his first book, written with William Gaudelli and released in March, 2023. Titled "Pedagogy of Global Events," this book explores a relatively new phenomenon of cultural events—concerts, media experiences, and film series—designed to bring attention to global problems and spark action.
Patterson also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of History and is an affiliated faculty member in the Center for Public History at Temple University. Before joining the faculty at Temple University he was an Assistant Professor at Sacred Heart University, an instructor at Teachers College, Columbia University, and a social studies teacher in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He has received several awards for his teaching, including a Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2022 and an award for outstanding advising and mentorship from the College of Education and Human Development in 2021.
