The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) continues to demonstrate its commitment to innovation and thought leadership through the Acres of Diamonds Lecture Series. This series honors the charge of Temple's founder, Russell Conwell, who emphasized discovering the "acres of diamonds" in our backyard, connecting the CEHD community with prominent voices addressing critical issues in education today.
In 2024, CEHD welcomed two nationally recognized leaders: Deborah Ball and Royel Johnson.
Deborah Ball, professor and former dean at the University of Michigan, is renowned for her groundbreaking research on teaching, teacher education and equitable instructional practices. Her thought-provoking presentation challenged educators to reflect on teaching's role in advancing equity and excellence, especially for marginalized student populations.
Royel Johnson, a leading voice in diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) and associate professor at the University of Southern California, captivated audiences with his insights on systemic change in higher education. He emphasized the importance of fostering inclusive learning environments that empower historically underrepresented students.
"The Acres of Diamonds Lecture Series is an opportunity for our community to learn from leading experts while fostering dialogue on the challenges and innovations shaping the field of education and human development," said Monika Williams Shealey, Dean of the CEHD.
Past speakers, such as Rich Milner of Vanderbilt University, further underscore CEHD's role as a hub for pioneering ideas and meaningful engagement.
Looking ahead, the next installment of the Acres of Diamonds Lecture Series is set for Jan. 29, 2025.
