The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at Temple University continues to expand its flexible learning options, offering online and virtual formats across several graduate programs and certificates. These formats are designed to support working professionals and learners seeking more accessible pathways to education.

Among these offerings, the master of science in education in applied behavior analysis (ABA) is now available in a synchronous cohort format using videoconferencing technology. Designed to prepare students for board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA) certification, students who choose this program delivery enjoy live instruction with the convenience of remote access.

The fully online, asynchronous option for the master of education in special education, which was introduced in fall 2021, allows students to complete asynchronous coursework alongside required in-person field experiences. The program offers the flexibility to study full- or part-time and to finish within five years.

To better support students balancing academic goals with professional commitments, the master of education in urban education and policy is advancing its hybrid and virtual offerings. These enhanced formats create more accessible pathways for learners across geographic locations.

Also offered online or as a hybrid learning option, the graduate English language teaching certificate provides a flexible study option for educators seeking to build or deepen their skills in teaching English learners.

"We're thrilled to see these dynamic programs continue to grow. At CEHD, we remain committed to our vision of 'a world where all people have access to an outstanding education,'" said Dan Overbay, CEHD director of enrollment management. "These initiatives are expanding opportunities for future educators—not just in Philadelphia, but across Pennsylvania and throughout the nation."

The CEHD remains committed to expanding access and meeting students where they are, while maintaining the academic quality and rigor that define Temple's graduate programs.

Understanding Learning Options

  • Online: Course content and instruction are delivered entirely over the internet. Students can access materials and complete coursework remotely without needing to attend in-person classes.
  • Virtual: Courses take place in real time using video conferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom). Students and instructors interact live, replicating a classroom experience from remote locations.
  • Hybrid: A mix of in-person and online learning. Some classes meet face-to-face, while others occur online, either live (synchronously) or on the student's own time (asynchronously).
  • Synchronous: Live learning sessions are held at scheduled times. Students and instructors log in simultaneously to engage in real-time lectures, discussions or group work.
  • Asynchronous: Learning that does not occur in real time. Students access lectures, assignments and materials on their own schedule within set deadlines, allowing for more flexibility.
