There are a variety of reasons why it's great to be a College of Education and Human Development student! Below are some of our favorites.

  1. The Community
The College of Education and Human Development has a close-knit community; this is a place where everyone knows your name. Whether you need help with homework, want friends to eat dinner with, or just want to chat with someone new, College of Education and Human Development students, staff and faculty are always there for each other!

  2. The Faculty
Our faculty are changemakers that impact students' everyday lives. Not only do they prepare lessons in pedagogy, but also serve as consistent resources for students. From conducting research on food and housing insecurity to authoring articles on "thinking scientifically", College of Education and Human Development faculty are powerhouses in the field of education.

  3. Outreach Programs
In the spirit of fulfilling Temple University's historic mission, the College of Education and Human Development makes serving the needs of schools and communities a top priority. Faculty members collaborate with teachers, school districts, peer institutions, and policymakers to bridge the gap between theory and practice and work to implement change where it matters. Some outreach programs that the College of Education and Human Development offers are Jumpstart, GEAR UP and Upward Bound.

  4. Small Class Size
Small lectures emphasize student-led discussions which help students become comfortable sharing their own reflections with others. In the College of Education and Human Development, students are not just numbers. Each student has an opportunity to share their unique ideas in a welcoming environment.

  5. Immersive Teaching Experiences
"Our field placements give us the opportunity to connect what we are learning in our classes to real-life teaching experiences. During this time, we not only learn about best teaching practices, but we also gain experience in things such as classroom management. I truly believe that these opportunities are what prepare pre-service teachers for the situations they will face when they have their own classrooms." - Jordan Ditko EDU '19

  6. Service-based Mission
Since our founding in 1919, the College of Education and Human Development has been a leader in preparing educational professionals who have a transformative effect on the schools or other organizations in which they serve. The research, teaching, and service of our faculty continue the College's historic commitment to social justice and to improving the life chances of traditionally underserved populations.

  7. Unique Traditions
The College of Education and Human Development has a few fantastic and long-standing traditions. One of our most special traditions is rubbing the decorative apple during College of Education and Human Development convocation and commencement. As a symbol of the beginning of students' college careers, students rub a metal apple during their convocation. Coming full circle, students then, rub the apple at their graduation as a symbol of good luck for their future educational careers.

  8. Successful Alumni
Many College of Education and Human Development alumni go serve their communities in marvelous ways. From principal of the year, Todd Price EDU '99; Head of the California Board of Education, Linda Darling-Hammond EDU '78; and Dan Baker, EDU '72, voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, our alumni bring pride to the College of Education and Human Development and are change makers in their respective fields.

  9. Rad-Dish Café
The Rad-Dish is a student-run sustainable co-op café housed in Ritter Hall. Whether students have a hankering for hummus grilled cheese or vegan baked goods, College of Education and Human Development students can always depend on the Rad-Dish for a delicious treat in between classes.

  10. Student Clubs and Organizations
The College of Education and Human Development is home to many wonderful student clubs and organizations. Ian Henshaw EDU '20, a member of Jumpstart, says, "[g]et involved by working with the children in the local community. If you can do that your freshman year, great. If you want to take a year to get acclimated to college and then do it your sophomore year, that works as well. But, get involved as soon as you can."
